Govee + Alexa Integration Fix: Missing or Duplicated Bulbs

The issue

I ran into a frustrating issue where Govee bulbs would appear correctly in the Govee app but show up missing on the Alexa side. Rooms wouldn’t turn off cleanly, and deleting bulbs in Alexa revealed a weird layering problem (multiple devices stacked under one name). Network resets and unlinking/relinking the Govee skill didn’t help.

I found this Reddit thread describing the same behavior.

The fix

What you’ll need: Two devices, one with the Govee app open, one with Alexa’s device list up (filtered by “Added recently”).

  1. Confirm Alexa is linked to Govee. Run a device discovery manually.
  2. Turn off automatic device discovery in Alexa to prevent it from interfering while you work.
  3. Note which bulbs are missing. You can also identify problem bulbs by turning off a room and seeing which lights stay on.
  4. Factory reset each problem bulb. Flip the light switch off and on about five times until the bulb flashes white and yellow. For bulbs on a shared fixture, gently unscrew and re-screw the bulb five times to trigger the same reset.
  5. In the Govee app, add the reset bulb. It should appear in Alexa immediately. Name it, connect it to wifi, and enable local control in Govee.
  6. In the Alexa app, tap the newly discovered device → gear icon (upper right) → add it to the correct room. Wait a moment, then go back.
  7. Re-open the device and tap the gear icon again. You should see a banner reading something like “Finish setting up this device to use it with Alexa.” Tap that link.
  8. ⚠️ VERY IMPORTANT: If you land on a page asking “Where do you want to use this light?” or “What do you want to call your light?” — ignore both fields and tap the X in the upper right instead.
  9. If you see the screen confirming the device is ready, eg: “X is set up and ready to use” you’re all set.

Repeat steps 4–9 for each problem bulb. Most of mine worked after one sequence of these instructions but I had one fixture that was stubborn and would not work despite following these settings. I turned off the fixture and continued doing this sequence with other lights and eventually found another bulb that was the culprit.
